No one wants to wake up to a waterlogged garden. Standing water can damage foundations and lead to damp problems in the home or office. It also destroys your carefully maintained garden or the green space around your commercial premises.

Here are the main reasons your garden keeps flooding.

    Clay-Rich Soil Means Poor Drainage

Clay-heavy soil is common in the Bath region and throughout North Somerset. Fine, densely packed clay particles make the soil sticky and almost impenetrable, so rainwater absorption is slow at best and impossible at worst. The result is large puddles of standing water.

    Inappropriate Garden Layout

Water needs somewhere to run to. The wrong layout of paths and lawns may direct excess water toward the house. Uneven lawns and compacted soil also impede the flow of rainwater, causing large puddles to form.

    Impermeable Surfaces

Artificial grass, paved driveways, and concrete patios are non-absorbent. This leads to standing water and unsightly puddles rather than being absorbed and redirected.

    Damaged or Blocked Drains

Maintaining your drainage system is essential. Broken gutters, blocked pipework, or drainage that’s incorrectly situated prevent water from flowing safely through your garden.

    Rising Water Table

Increased rainfall in recent years has raised the water table in low-lying areas and near rivers, such as the River Avon, which runs through Bath and Bristol. The Bath flood gates have helped control flooding in recent years, but it’s still essential to correctly maintain your garden and drainage systems.

How to Fix Garden Drainage Problems in Bristol and Bath

The experienced technicians at Mega Rod have been helping homes and businesses solve the problem of garden drainage for years.

    Here’s How We Do It

    1. Site Assessment

We conduct a thorough inspection to assess the unique requirements of your garden.

    2. Install, Maintain, and Repair Drains and Guttering

Damaged or blocked drains are repaired or replaced as appropriate. We may also suggest installing additional drainage or guttering to deal with your situation more effectively.

Regular maintenance prevents many problems, so we recommend regular inspections by Mega Rod to keep everything in the best condition. This may be all you need to prevent your garden from flooding (depending on your individual circumstances).

    3. Sustainable Protection with a Soakaway System

This simple drainage solution is ideal for areas where water collects, such as drives or lawns. An underground channel or hole is dug, lined with a filter membrane, and filled with gravel or specialist plastic crates. The soakaway can absorb large quantities of water, which then filters into the surrounding soil.

    4. Install a French Drain

A perforated pipe is placed into a gravel-filled trench. This allows water to be absorbed and directed out of the area. It can be connected to a soakaway or a nearby watercourse. This system is perfect for preventing flooding and keeping damp at bay.

    5. Improvements or Modifications to Your Garden

Permeable paving can be used for drives and patios, and raised flower beds filled with good-quality soil allow for better drainage. Improve clay-heavy soil by mixing in manure or organic matter such as leaves. Lawns can be spiked (aerated) to improve drainage, and shallow trenches filled with grass (swales) can collect and redistribute excess water.

You may need a gardening specialist for some of these measures, but we can advise you on the best solutions for your specific situation.
